Satire is Used in the Portraits, Gin Lane, by William...

What is satire? According to oxforddictionaries.com, satire is â€Å"The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.† This literary device is portrayed heavily in both the illustrations â€Å"Gin Lane† by William Hogarth and in â€Å"Untitled† by Paul Kuczynski. â€Å"Gin Lane† is basically an illustration by William Hogarth that depicts life in the gin shops and shows the negative effects the drink had on the people of London. It shines a light on the horrible circumstances London was under when gin was introduced to its people. â€Å"Unititled† is an illustration by Paul Kuczynski that represents how our current society†¦show more content†¦In the top story of one the buildings fortunate to still be standing, is a man who has hung himself from the rafters. Willaim Hogarth used all these startling sc enes to grab the attention of the viewer and give them an insight on London at its lowest. Through â€Å"Gin Lane,† Hogarth expressed the ravenous effects gin had on the people of London and how it affected the living environment as well. â€Å"Untitled† by Paul Kuczynski also contains satire, however the author of this portrait uses satire to depict the theme of isolation, instead of misery, poverty, ruin and neglect. This simple, yet thought provoking picture, shows a man looking through a periscope that is shaped like the Facebook symbol, to see through a window above an open door. The door is not barricaded in any way, shape or form, so the man is able to walk outside and see what is going on in the world first hand. Instead, he chooses to stay inside by himself and view the world through Facebook. Through â€Å"Untitled,† Kuczynski conveys the message that social media interaction is overtaking physical interaction. People are more likely to go on social media to find out what is happening than to go out and experience it themselves. Kuczynski’s painting greatly showcases that even in its simplicity. Despite the fact that both pieces of art contain various differences, they contain similarities as well. Some of the differences include the message portrayed, themes and the style of drawing. From Agriculture To Industrialization To Innovation And

From agriculture to industrialization to innovation and the expansion of technology, the acceleration of worldwide interactions has profoundly shaped today’s society. Globalization exists beyond the ends of America. The rapid growth of local and global relationships proves our interdependency. Our willingness to effectively and cooperatively communicate determines our fates in this globalized world. Globalization is â€Å"the expansion and intensification of social relations and consciousness across world-time and world-space† (Steger, 2013, p. 15). The four main dimensions are economic, political, ecological, and cultural. Because the effects of globalization are very polarizing, globalization still remains a controversial issue. There is†¦show more content†¦Globalization helps the political world by checking in on big businesses and ensuring that they are not abusing their power. Big businesses sometimes make selfish decisions to retain control; however glo balization prevents this by paving way for a more even power distribution and allowing smaller governments to collaborate and potentially create a larger influence. Also, many international organizations have been formed to promote cooperation. For example, the United Nations ensures peace and security, helps develop friendly relations, helps nations work cooperatively to improve lives, and harmonizes nations’ actions. The G20, or Group of Twenty, also aims to adequately represent all global economies. With nationalism minimized and the growth of international organizations, countries are encouraged to work together and learn from each other. There are no positive outcomes of globalization within the ecological framework. Globalization gives people the opportunity to explore other cultures and understand others’ values through media, art, music, songs, and traveling. T.S. Elliots The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock free essay sample

A comparison of several of Emily Dickinsons poems to The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, by T. S. Eliot. The paper looks at the strong contrast between The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and the social commentary in Emily Dickinsons poems, notably 67, 249, 254, 505, and 712. The uncertainties of social standing that plague the character J. Alfred Prufrock are contrasted with Dickinsons resolve of these issues in her own life. A distinction is also drawn between their outlook and view of themselves in society and their ultimate happiness. The paper proposes that Dickinsons poems answer the questions Prufrock poses regarding his inability to take action. `At the beginning of the poem, Prufrock shows the woman he is with a sunset, comparing it to `a patient etherised upon a table` (3). This instantly creates an unsettling mood of social insecurities. Dickinson also uses ether as a metaphor, writing that she `would rather be the One/ Raised softly to the Ceilings-/ And out, and easy on-/ Through Villages of Ether-` (505, 10-13). Essay on Education and Kwame

Essay on Education and Kwame Essay on Education and Kwame It is stricking how two people can react the same without even knowing. My brother Kwame, and I though are of different sex but one cannot miss the fact that we are siblings if you really know us. For examples we are both religious and prayerful. We both like to cook and have the same health risks, we all chip our teeth and snore when when sleeping. Despite our similarities, though we are of the same blood, we are differerent in personalities, appearance and education. Firstly, it is shocking how people from the same blood and genetic material look difference . For instance my brother is tall about six foot and five inch, and broad shouldered whiles am about five foot and one inch. I'm petite and slim and weight about one hundred and twenty pounds but my brother weight like two hundred and eighty pounds. Our height and weight is not only differences we have in apperance but facial shapes also. My brother Kwame has oblong face shape (thats roughly resembles a triangle with a round corners). I have a round face shape with wide cheekbones and a tapering jaw and forehead. Kwame has a deep set of eyes, which creates prominent brow bone but I have monolid eyes which are flat on the surface and brow bones less defined. I have a full lips whiles Kwame has a thin lips. How To Start A Niche Blog (And Why You Should)

How To Start A Niche Blog (And Why You Should) You can divide all blogs into two categories: lifestyle blogs and niche blogs. These categories represent two conscious decisions that bloggers can make: Im going to write about everything, or Im going to write about one thing.   Bloggers have 2 choices: Write about everything, or write about one thing. #NicheBloggingNiche blogs are when you write about one thing, and one thing only. They are a blog with a one-track mind, having one purpose, one goal. Why in the world would you ever consider something as unfun as a niche blog?  Because niche blogging is where real traction and traffic happen for a blog. Why You Should Start A Niche Blog As a blog reader I like variety, but when it comes time to save a blogs RSS feed in Feedly for reading and sharing later, I much prefer niche blogs. Niche blogs save me time.  They fit into a specific category and I know that when I want to read on a certain topic, the posts will stay true to the category. I will find content on the topic Im looking for and nothing else. For lifestyle blogs, I end up dumping them into a category I call Random Interesting (yes, I really call it that) and I only venture in there when I have time to kill. Its not that I dont enjoy reading those blogs (I actually do), but when I am pressed for time I dont always have the option to sift through content to find something that might be useful in the moment. I turn to categories that I know will give me what Im looking for. In other words, when it comes time to share content, niche blogs are the workhorse readers turn to. Variety, within boundaries, works. Variety, without boundaries, can be a mess. #NicheBloggingThats great that niche blogs give me, the content curator, an easier day. But what benefits do you, the blogger, get from a niche blog? 1. Niche Blogs Keep You On Track Focus is hard enough when you blog. This is especially true on days when you dont have ideas and are tempted to write about your favorite sports team just this one time. When you have a defined niche, its pretty easy to say no, the NFL doesnt have anything to do with my pastry blog. By knowing the specific topic you are writing about, you actually have more tools available to help get you out of an idea rut. Techniques to break writers block, like brainstorming or a headline storm, are easier when you have boundaries that define where you should operate. Lets consider an example of how the two compare. I have a lifestyle blog and I cant think of anything to write about. Has anything interesting happened to me lately? Have I observed anything interesting about life in general I think people might like to hear about? Have I read anything lately that caught my attention that I could write about for my readers? I have a niche blog about shoes, and I cant think of anything to write about. I can go to my RSS reader and get ideas on my niche topic that are trending right now. I can see which of my old posts are most popular and repurpose them. I can do Google keyword research on shoe-related phrases. I can set up a Google Alert on different shoe-related topics. Neither the lifestyle blog or niche blog is better, but a niche blog has more concrete methods of finding ideas because the topic is restricted. Narrow boundaries keep you from weaving all over the place. Niche blogs make idea and headline generation easier. Boundaries are good.2. Niche Blogs Give You A Reliable Audience I have several personal blogs; a few are niche and a few are without boundaries whatsoever. My main blog is mainly personal, and Ill write on any topic that strikes my fancy. My core readers are those who connect with my personality and as an individual, and not with a specific topic. While that is valid, it isnt a reliable audience that you can build a huge email list or serious traffic on (unless youre already famous). The average blogger isnt generally going to be a mini-star with a huge following that clings to them no matter what they write. A great example is a viral blog post I had recently. The topic of the post was on food and health, and I picked up a lot of email subscribers who were interested in that topic. The next weeks email came out and most of those subscribers went away. Why? Because they thought I was a food blog, and thats what they wanted. A niche blog will give you an audience that you understand, and that understands you. They are less prone to churn. Niche blogs give you an audience that you understand, and that understands you.3. Niche Blogs Make It Easier To Monetize Your Blog Perhaps youve decided youll use advertising on your blog to earn income. Once again, niche blogs for the win. If youre blog is about everything, what ads will you sell? Itll be hit and miss to guess what ads will actually be the most successful. You dont know which topic makes your audience show up and read and therefore, you dont know which ads will interest them. Its also a hard sell to advertisers. They want to know what your blog is about. How do you sell an ad when your blog is about me? The same can be said for ebooks, training, and other items that people use to make money through a blog. How will you choose a topic for an ebook, or training, and know that your readers will buy it, if youre not writing a niche blog? You have no idea what theyd spend money on or like to learn. All you know is that they are willing to come to your blog to hear your random thoughts on all kinds of topics for free. 4. Niche Blogs Expand Your Own Knowledge Blogs that arent niche blogs dont generally do in-depth coverage on a particular topic. Their lifeblood is the variety, and sometimes topic coverage is a bit like skipping stones. Each post glances at the surface of the topic and then moves on to the next topic. Niche blogs, however, encourage in-depth coverage of topics. They have to. Youre only writing about one specific topic and youll naturally dig in deeper and cover details as much as you can because there isnt another topic to bounce on to. For example, if you have a food blog, you wouldnt write just one blog post about whether you should use cold or room temp butter for making a cake and call it done, never to revisit butter temperature again. Instead, you might do a series on how to properly use butter, and that might lead you to do features on more individual ingredients and how they affect your baking. With niche blogs, you dont have to come up with 1000 new ideas. You can start with three and approach them from every angle possible before moving on. A niche blog allows you to do that, but on a general lifestyle blog, youre just going to be seen as strangely obsessive about butter. You dont need 1000 new ideas on a #NicheBlog. A few, from all angles, will do.How To Start A Niche Blog The difference between starting a niche blog and any other blog isnt particularly magical or unusual. It involves research and planning before you jump in and start writing. It involves more than just the decision to start a blog. It requires you to decide to start a blog about ___.  If youre looking for your niche blog to bring in money, youll want to be even more conscientious in your selection of a niche topic. 1. Know Your Passion If you hate vegetables, deciding to write a niche blog about vegetables is a terrible idea. Even if you like vegetables well enough, it still might not be enough. Remember, you are going to be writing heavily about a very focused topic. Thats going to be difficult enough. At least make it easy on yourself and have a serious passionate and interest in your niche. Otherwise, its going to be a very short-lived blog. 2. Decide On Short Or Long Term Trend niche blogs wont last, but they can be profitable for a while. For example, your niche blog might capitalize on a TV show or movie. Once the show is no longer on the air, or the movie buzz has faded, your blog wont be the traffic horse it once was. But that doesnt mean you shouldnt do it. As long as you know, going in, that youre going to be in a bit of a pressure cooker to build traffic quickly, and are ready to capitalize on absolutely every last drop of it before it fades, go ahead. Its the way your entire blog exists by capitalizing on a trend. 3. Decide If And How Youll Monetize Your Site Perhaps youre writing your niche blog for the absolute love of the topic and dont care about bringing in money. Fair enough.  Most people create a niche blog in the hopes of bringing in money, because niche blogs are uniquely able to handle advertising and affiliate marketing very well. Lets say you do want to use affiliate marketing. You will need to pick a niche topic where good affiliate marketing programs and products are available, and youll get paid a decent commission. Youll need to research available affiliate programs and find a reputable one that fits what you need best. Or maybe you want to use advertising. Again, youll need a blog whose topic attracts a specific audience that has advertisers eager to market to them. And, youll need to build up traffic to a certain level before some advertising programs will even consider your blog. Remember to comply with the FTC and disclose on your blog if you decide to use affiliate marketing or paid reviews. Niche blogs are uniquely set up to bring in advertising and affiliate marketing money.4. Find Your Keyword Niche Youve decided youll write about coffee for your niche blog. But coffee is still pretty broad–are you talking about growing coffee? roasting coffee? brewing coffee? fair trade coffee? coffee culture? buying coffee? cooking with coffee? You need to find specific keywords if you want your niche blog to bring in money and traffic. Googles Keyword Planner is the most popular tool, and even though there is no shortage of blog posts telling you how to find the best keywords, you might consider Googles own instructions  on using Keyword Planner, too. Which site will be easier to target with affiliate marketing, advertising, and keywords: A niche blog about photography, or a niche blog about Nikon cameras? Sometimes the extreme niche blog is the way to go when you are looking to monetize your site and find precise keywords that do the heavy lifting. When it comes to traffic and monetizing your blog, the more focused your audience is, the better. 5. Tighten Up Your Current Blog Maybe your current blog went off track and became a blog about everything. How do you turn your blog into a niche blog? Look at your categories. Youll notice that a blog off track often has category and tag bloat. Which category do you seem to write in the most? Thats a good hint at where your passion and interest for blogging lies. Look at your stats. Which of your posts tend to get the most traffic? This is an indicator of why people come to your blog, and it is also an indicator of a post that has done well in search. Dissect the post. Whats the topic? How did you write it? What brings the search engines? Make more posts like this on the most popular topic. Do some pruning. You might consider removing posts that are completely off-topic. If you absolutely must write on more than one topic, why not start a personal blog elsewhere and rehab your current blog into a niche blog? If your blog has been around a while, build on that traffic and following while you regain focus as a niche. Resist that spontaneous post. If you catch yourself feeling like you just have to post a photo and story about your dog and the cute thing he did today, stop. Dont put it on your blog. That is more appropriate for social media, or your personal lifestyle blog. Again, if you must have this outlet, create a personal blog to do it on. Keep your niche blog purely on topic, always. Dont give up on a wayward blog. Even if you havent stayed on topic over the years, its not too late to start. Decide today that you will have a niche blog, and get that mindset in place.

A study of one bilateral free trade agreement of country A and country Essay

A study of one bilateral free trade agreement of country A and country B 05091 - Essay Example Japan is an important country where the foreign direct investment takes place and also facilitates the Mexican exports. The investment that flows out of Japan to Mexico and the technology transfer that takes place within the economy is very important for the growth of the economy. It brings in competitiveness within the economy and also creates employment opportunities (Kawai, 2005). The trade relations within the two nations lead to a diversification of the export market. Strengthening of the economic relations within the nations will enhance the positions of Japan and Mexico in the international markets (Ravenhill, 2003). However, the potential economic relations between the nations have not been realized completely. The main purpose of the free trade partnership agreement was to promote liberalization of the trade as well as investments within the economy and also facilitate the movement of individuals between Japan and Mexico for trade purposes (Ravenhill, 2003). The agreement aims to set up a comprehensive economic partnership involving a competition policy, development of the business environment and bilateral cooperation in the field of vocational education and training and also provides support to the small and the medium enterprises within the economy (Yoshimatsu, 2005). It is expected that through this agreement, Japan will gain access to Mexican marke t which is growing at a fast pace. The agreement will also enable the entry of firms into the north South American markets through Mexico and the Japanese companies will gain equal treatment along with the companies of Canada, US and European Union in the fields of Customs duties, investment and Government procurement (Manger, 2005). According to the agreement, the custom duties will be eliminated or reduced on agricultural as well industrial products. Further, both the countries signing the agreement should cooperate in the field of anticompetitive activities. However, the agreement has left the

Nuclear Weapons and Terrorism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Nuclear Weapons and Terrorism - Essay Example Although it may be the case that some terrorists (Or terrorist sympathizers) might be able to build an implosion assembly method (Using a plutonium core) or gun-type assembly method (Uranium tip) thermonuclear weapon from scratch, this approach would be unlikely. Firstly, it would be difficult to gather all of the raw nuclear materials and assemble them into a working weapon. Although it was postulated by Nuclear Control Institute (2011) that in theory terrorists could steal nuclear power plant fuel and convert that into a working nuclear weapon. However it is my belief that it is far more likely that the theft of completed nuclear weapon sub-components from various sources and then bring them together. The next major issue for consideration is the idea that a completed nuclear weapon could be stolen by terrorist groups. Although it may be the case that nations with nuclear weapons state that they have strict controls over the storage and transport it is the case that the Internation al Atomic Energy Commission only places physical security standards on international shipments of nuclear materials and not the internal transportation of these weapons. As such one could postulate that there may exist inadequate protection of several nations nuclear weapon arsenals.

The Fundamental Changes of Adolescence Essay Example for Free

The Fundamental Changes of Adolescence Essay Puberty is the sum of all the changes that occur in the growing girl or boy as the individual passes from childhood into adulthood. This phase of rapid physical and psychological and social changes prepares the child into a period of full sexual maturation. Furthermore, this phase is manifested by growth spurt and development of secondary sex characteristics. Growth hormones are the reason for the development of secondary sex characteristics which can be described as the changes in the outward appearance that signal the onset of reproductive maturity. These include growth of pubic hair, changes in the appearance of sex organs and breast development. Accompanying these changes is the feeling of anxiety and shame of these rapid bodily changes so without proper guidance during this turbulent stage in his life may not prepare him for the more complex problems of adulthood. Not all adolescents undergo these changes at the same time; some mature late while some mature early. The onset of puberty can occur as early as age 7 years in girls and 9 and ? in boys or as late as 13 in girls and 13 ? in boys. In girls, the interval between the first sign of puberty and complete physical maturation can be as short as six years and in boys, the comparable interval ranges from about two years to five years (J. Tanner, 1962. ) For the boys, the sign that he has reached sexual maturity is termed spermache. Spermache is the first ejaculation of the seminal fluid generally occurring a year after the beginning of growth of his primary sexual organ, the penis. On the other hand, girls have reached sexual maturation with the onset of her first menstruation and the term for this occurrence is menarche. Psychological Effect of Puberty The bodily changes during adolescent stage can affect teen’s behaviour and psychological functioning. The increase of hormone testosterone is directly linked to the increase in boy’s sex drive. Bodily changes will also make the children more conscious with his physical appearance. There is also a change in how others react to the adolescents’ new image in turn these reaction will elicit change in the adolescents’ self-image. During this period, the adolescent also sets high ideals, dreams and aspirations. They wanted to act like an adult but society cannot yet grant him the privileges that adults enjoy. In wanting to reach his high ideals, adolescents can realize that they cannot reach those ideals and this leads to loss of self-confidence and may experience a feeling of inadequacy. Timing and Tempo of Puberty There are factors which can affect the timing and tempo of puberty. One of the prime reasons is the genetic makeup of the individual. There are studies which reveal that African-American female mature earlier than their American counterparts. Study also shows that maturity occurs much earlier in prosperous countries as compared to less developed countries and scientists believe that better nutrition, improved sanitation and better disease control caused the early maturation. Those teens that have experienced maturity during normal period have the high incidence of having less emotional and psychological problems than those who matures early or late because they have the right amount of time spent in childhood which can make them cope better with the demands of adolescence (Fundamental Changes in Adolescents, p. 26.). Reaction to Early Maturation Boys and girls have different reactions when dealing with early maturity. For the girls, it has both positive and negative effects. The positive effect is that when compared with late maturing, early maturing girls are more independent minded, more popular with boys and felt better with their figure. They also dated more frequently. Because of their more independent attitude, they can be more likely to get into trouble at school because they tend to speak their mind without thinking if their comments might hurt another’s feelings. Girls who mature early also have the tendency to get low grades in class because they are in dates often and they neglect their school duties. Early maturers are treated as more mature by peers and adults so they have the tendency to show adult behaviours and can cope easily with the emotional turmoil brought about by the sudden physical and psychological changes. For boys early maturation mean competitive advantage over peers in the field of sports and in leadership. They are also more attractive to girls than their awkward looking peers and are often viewed as sophisticated, poised and self-confidence. One disadvantage is that early maturers have less time for childhood games and fun because adults expect them to do more mature roles. There is less time to adjust to physical maturity so they tend to be socially immature. Reaction to Late Maturation Same as with early maturation, boys and girls have different reaction to late maturation. Girls who are late maturers are under less pressure because adults don’t expect her to behave and act maturely. Late maturers also mature at the same time as boys so they are in the same social and psychological level that they don’t have difficulty in forming intimate relationship with the opposite sex. Potential disadvantage of late maturity in boys is that late-maturing boys cannot compete with early maturers in forming boy-girl relationships because they are still conscious with their physical appearance and because they still have underdeveloped muscles and hoarse voice and this leads to the development of negative self-concept: a feeling of inadequacy, a feeling of hopelessness and rejection. It is easy to spot late and early maturers. Physically, their difference is marked by their body built. Those with athletic build are likely to be early maturers but those with slight build are the late maturers. A Healty Issue :: essays research papers

A Healthy Issue   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It has been long debated as to what method is the best way to lose weight. Every day it seems there is a new diet craze sweeping across America. The birth of fad diets has brought hope to those wanting to lose weight fast. Which is the best diet plan? There are so many to choose from now, and there are not only diet plans. There are hundreds of dietary supplements now available as well as new-age surgeries to help us battle the bulge. Each method has its own positives and negatives. Some have lead to amazing weight loss, while others have lead to sickness and even death. With all of the different ways available to lose weight, is there a better solution than to simply follow a balanced diet combined with regular exercise?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Fad diets are the newest thing to hit our waistlines. They are notorious for being a fast way to lose weight. Some of these diets, just to name a few examples include: Atkins’ Diet, Weight Watchers, Slim Fast, South Beach Diet, The Zone, Subway Diet, eDiets, The Beverly Hills Diet, and the list goes on and on. All promise dramatic weight loss that is easy to keep off as long as you follow their regimen. Are they safe? Which one is right for you? To get a better understanding about what they entail, let’s take a look at a few of them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Atkins’ diet is probably the most popular in today’s society. Dr. Robert Atkins, a cardiologist, actually came up with his plan back in 1972. Unlike the many fad diets that followed, the Atkins’ diet survived the term fad, and has actually become more popular as the years have passed. In the Atkins’ diet, the formula is allowing foods that are high in protein and that are low in carbohydrates. To start, the plan requires you to go through an induction period for two weeks that will balance your metabolism. An individual is allowed to have as much fat and protein as desired, but the foods must contain less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. Some of the foods allowed include: meat, poultry, fish, eggs, oil, butter and cheese. After completing the two-week induction period, the amount of carbohydrates allowed is doubled to 35-40 grams per day. When the individual reaches his or her goal weight, the amount is increased again, up to 60 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Creative Writing: All Around the Corner

Mornings would normally be a 7 o'clock rise, day beginning at 8:30, released at 3:20. Today, being the holidays, I can drag myself away from all this for a blissful lie in. A bliss broken by the ‘bring'ing of the phone. â€Å"Yeah right† I thought to myself. â€Å"Answer, don't answer? Give up my wings, stay in heaven?† The choice being obvious, I returned to my daydreaming. However, the rarity of a phone call for me rather than anyone else in the house made me answer the second time round. What a mistake. It was Katie, the definition of moron, ringing for a ‘chat'. I gave up my warm bed to hear her wining voice wine in my ear. â€Å"Yeah† I said. I could have been agreeing to a heart transplant for all I knew but I thought I'd better show I was still on the other end of the line Unfortunately yes was the wrong answer. It then took me a while of bluffing to find out I'd agreed to go for a drink. Catch up. I no longer felt worthy of my blankets. Sasha was my remedy. The friendship Sasha and I shared could not be described as ‘life long', simply because I only met her 6 months ago when she moved here. However, I don't see how time can predict how good a friends you are. We click, and we have fun, We're there for each other, and we give each other space when needed. Sounds like a great friendship to me. A best friend always knows what you need. In my case, my best knows my great need of the retail variety. All life's troubles can be thrown aside in a good few hours at the shops. â€Å"Wait! How superb.† The frock Sasha was admiring could only be described as a Sasha dress. Only she could pull off such extravagant styles and colours and yet still appear so modest and respectable. It makes you wonder who else buys these things. Maybe there's a bigger population of Sashas out there than first thought. And so we hit the shops. The trick is, not to let them know you have absolutely no money whatsoever. Give the illusion that you have it, you just see no need to spend it. However, the small amount of cash we do posess usually goes on the much-needed hourly revival break. We took the seats unoccupied, partially shared with two mid-thirties women. The gossip they didn't mind sharing with the world was amazing. Law suits, affairs, bribery, all coming from one woman's life. Of course this left the other woman to demonstrate listening techniques far too challenging for an average human being. By the look on her face, she seemed to be thinking of something soothing. Chocolate perhaps. It was hard to have our own conversation while still listening to this woman's life story, and so drank silently, occasionally attempting short conversations to cover the fact that, lets face it, the world is a nosy place. A nudge on my leg from Sasha made my leg really sore, but also made me realise who it was standing behind me. I arrived with Sasha for support. I knew that if Katie showed her real mutant self then I'd need back up. Sasha had said she didn't mind, so if she was lying she should learn to tell the truth. I turned round to Katie. She sat down, taking the place of the really good listener who had now left with her friend. Katie's mouth opened, and my ears shut, if they could do such a thing. Its not even as if my concentration span is normally this small. I began to think, â€Å"which do I really prefer. Galaxy or Cadburys?† â€Å"So how are you all?† Katie's manner can be described as nothing but ‘chirpy'. This was a pointless question from the start. We're obviously still living or else we'd have given drinks a miss. â€Å"Not really been up to much have we Sasha.† Usually the case. Boredom seeps round every corner. What is there to do when you're this age? Your either too old to do what you used to, or too young to move on. Never any money, allowance doesn't go anywhere near far enough. â€Å"Family's been doing my head in at the moment. Acting like I still need the potty training.† Sasha always uses these chats to get her family problems off her chest. â€Å"They just give me no respect. The other day I began to tell them of the trip we may plan. Do you have any idea how tormenting they can be. Yeah, perhaps they do ‘have my best interests at heart' but come on, I can look after myself.† With this I have to agree. I've met Sasha's family, and the independence they give her, though very loving, is invisible, simply because it doesn't exist. It was hard not to notice how Katie, even with her chirpy attitude, had managed to dampen our spirits so much. â€Å"Got the energy for another shop Sash?† I personally didn't have the energy to lift my feet, but I wanted to move on from this subject. I didn't feel the same way about my family. Only last month I became a great grandma. It isn't all bad.

Love and Power in Marriage as Portrayed in A Doll House

A Doll’s House by Ibsen has become a starting moment for a new step in the development of drama genre. Prior to this play, Ibsen’s contemporary drama consisted of behavior plays and historical theatre. But A Doll’s House added a new aspect to the problems highlighted by the contemporary drama. Ibsen in his play introduced a crucial examination of social issues, and the nature of Victorian marriage. By revealing the background of Helmer marriage Ibsen makes the intimate private and stands up for women identity. Revealing the secrecy of marriage Ibsen overturns the customary roles of a woman and a man as they were regarded by the society before. Marriage in Victorian Society Ibsen provides Nora with the new role different from the role of wife and mother that was an innovation for the contemporary society. As it was customary to refer to woman’s identity in the context of her marital role, Ibsen’s play appeared as a protest, and this play is still regarded as a feminist writing, although the author denied it. The author touched a few intertwined themes, but marital relations are one of the most crucial issues, referred to in the play. Victorian age was cruel towards human identity in general, let alone woman’s individuality. The economical background buried the interest to the individuality within the society. During the period after the French Revolution the thirst for individual freedom was replaced by the economic power, and as the result, women were deprived of the power more than ever. Nora’s changed attitude towards her marriage is not just a problem in the relations between a husband and wife; it is the symbol of the most serious problems of bourgeois values of the middle class. By rejecting the marriage, Nora also denies these values, thus demonstrating the opposition between identity and economical stability: â€Å"I should try to become a human being† (Act Three) A Doll’s House reflects Ibsen’s own relation to the problem of woman’s self-expression. He was sure that women could express themselves, their individuality but in a real life woman’s role in marriage came to a sacrifice. Neither husbands nor society treated women as equals with their spouses. The scene of Torvald being afraid of his employers believing that he had been influenced by his wife is a perfect illustration of the relation to women in Victorian society. Marriage in Victorian society became a kind of a social trap, worse for woman than for men. Divorce was not forbidden, but it was accompanied by such a strong social ban that it could ever be regarded as the possible way to resolve the problems in family life. That’s why Torvald shows his inner weakness by his desire to pretend that he and Nora had a happy family, rather than bear the social antagonism: â€Å"From this moment happiness is not the question; all that concerns us is to save the remains, the fragments, the appearance – † (Act Three) On the contrary, Nora, as the symbol of woman, who wasn’t treated as a powerful identity, shows her force by her serious intentions in finding her individuality. Nora feels a fragility of love, but she doesn’t give up and feels the power to build a new happy life instead of her unhappy marriage. Love and Power in the Marriage of Torvald and Nora Nora, who at the beginning was displayed as a happy woman full of love and devoted to her family, realizes that that her happiness is just her dream, but not reality. Thus, she and her husband exchange their roles – Nora is strong enough to face the reality, while her husband is afraid of everything that may damage his habitual life. Nora understands that she was treated like a child used for amusement. The men around her, her husband and her father wanted to see her helpless, seeing her only mission in serving them: â€Å"I have existed merely to perform tricks for you, Torvald. But you wanted it like that. You and father have committed a great sin against me. It is your fault that I have made nothing of my life. Our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll-wife, just as at home I was father's doll-child; and here the children have been my dolls.† (Act Three) This is how the concept and picture of marriage changes as the plot of the play goes. At the beginning of the play Nora and her husband seem to be a happy family, a husband and a wife who love each other. However, this happiness and love are built on a lie. Nora pretends that she is helpless without Torvald’s protection and power: I would never dream of doing anything you didn’t want me to† and â€Å"I never get anywhere without your help† (Act One), while the reader and spectator knows that she has already rescued Torvald’s life, and Nora’s words acquires dramatically ironical nature. When Mrs. Linde asks Nora if he ever reveals her secret about the loan, Nora shows her awareness of Torvald’s real attitude to her as to a beautiful doll, which has to amuse him: â€Å"Yes – some day, perhaps, after many years, when I am no longer as pretty as I am now. Don't laugh at me! I mean, of course, when Torvald is no longer as devoted to me as he is now; when my dancing and dressing-up and reciting have palled on him then it may be a good thing to have something in reserve.† (Act One) Conclusion As the play starts, Nora makes an impression of a weak and powerless woman, whose life is fully devoted to her family life, while Torvald seems to be the personification of power and domination. Their relations are set against the life story of Mrs. Linde, who at first denied her strong love to gain power and financial security. But by the end of the play the situation changes, Nora finds herself and her individuality although loses her love, and Mrs. Linde turns back to her true feelings. The problems shown with the help of characters’ interaction are not resolved by the author. Ibsen demonstrates the conflicts, but does not give any ways out. He just offers the possibilities, offering the readers and spectators to find their own viewpoint and solution. Related article: â€Å"My Ideal Wife† References Ibsen H. (1991) A Doll's House, Tram. Top Down Approach Of Policy Implementation Social Work Essay Essay Example

Top Down Approach Of Policy Implementation Social Work Essay Essay Example Top Down Approach Of Policy Implementation Social Work Essay Essay Top Down Approach Of Policy Implementation Social Work Essay Essay Analyzing the mental wellness policy in China through the position of policy execution, it is clear that it is runing under a top-down attack. Quantitatively, using the World Health Organization Mental Health Policy and Plan Checklist and the World Health Organization Mental Health Legislation Checklist to analyse the content of mental wellness policy and statute law in the PRC, we can happen that quite a batch of insufficiencies and defects. The WHO ( 2007 ) suggests the demand to develop a national advisory organic structure to authorities on the execution of mental wellness policies and services. Such a group could play a function in reexamining, monitoring and measuring mental wellness policies and programmes. The commission could besides join forces with other sectors such as the Ministries of Education, Ministries of Justice, Ministries of Local Government, Ministries of Social Welfare, and development bureaus and givers to raise consciousness of the impact of mental upsets every bit good as the demand to see mental wellness when developing their ain policies and programmes, in order to vouch more successful mental wellness policy execution. However, the mental wellness policy preparation and execution in PRC has tended to follow a top-down attack. There has been small audience in both the development and execution of current mental wellness. This survey shows that adequate and dependable informations for the development of evidence-based mental wellness policy is rarely available. However, dependable, comprehensive and accurate informations on the incidence of mental upsets, the Numberss of people go toing both specialist intervention, and the impact of mental upsets on the person and household, can all pave a sound footing for reasoning an increasing committedness and resources for mental wellness, and more effectual mental wellness attention bringing ( WHO, 2005 ) . Strengthening the grounds base through research in mental wellness and the development of an efficient and comprehensive mental wellness information system is hence an of import measure for the People s Republic of China in developing mental wellness policies which address those countries most in demand. Although there has been widespread support among citizens, head-shrinkers, attorneies, and media for the Mental Health Law. The passing of the statute law, which praised for stand foring best pattern in such countries as the extent of audience and in protecting human rights, was merely happened in Oct. 26, 2012, and will be officially enacted in May, 2013. This Law is an indispensable first measure towards set uping mental wellness statute law, and would show a political committedness towards the betterment of mental wellness attention in the PRC. However, contrasting with the other several Torahs specialising in economic system, national defence, or even political reform, the Mental Health Law is comparatively lagged buttocks, and it did non mention the proviso of more support, which is critical for effectual execution. Therefore, under this top-down attack, farther mental wellness services betterment of quality and enlargement of measure for mental illness individuals are hard. 4.1 Recovering and Rehabilitation from the Destruction Reopen to the Country and World After Mao s decease and the ruin of the Gang of Four in 1976, the mental wellness policy in the PRC has been bit by bit redeveloping and retrieving from the old catastrophe from 1977 to 1980. At first, there was important growing of enthusiasm by the policy shapers and psychiatric professionals to derive the rehabilitative consequence. On one manus, they began to acknowledge and analyze jobs and insufficiencies in mental wellness service in mental wellness cognition and services in China. They realized the misinterpretations caused by the political coercion, citing Dr Young Derson: We do non believe that you can acquire a disease from a incorrect thought nor will a correct thought remedy a patient. We try to learn the significance of unwellness, based on scientific cognition ( Achtenberg, 1983 ) . Therefore, more head-shrinkers began to see non-biological accounts for mental unwellnesss and experimented with more originative methods of psychological rehabilitation service bringin g ( Ran, 2005 ) . On the other manus, while many old interventions like utilizing Mao s plants to sublimate the patients value system faded off ( Achtenberg, 1983 ; Bloomingdale, 1980 ; Masserman, 1980 ) , communications with professionals from Western states flourished ( Li A ; Chan, 2003 ) . Hence, comparing with the socialist system of Chinese psychopathology mentioned a great figure of Western head-shrinkers when they came and observed the political manner in naming and handling mental wellness, the Western publications after the Cultural Revolution fell aggressively. This was non merely because the intensive willingness of Chinese head-shrinkers to get down researching in mental wellness, but besides due to the increasing publication in English about the state of affairs of PRC by the Chinese head-shrinkers ( Pearson, 1995 ) . However, these verves were so tempered disappointingly by two obstructions, at least in the initial phase. First and most significantly, the restraints from the uncertainness of political air currents and the authorities s attitude to the outside exchange. Second, after being insulated for more than three decennaries, they were shocked by their sudden exposure to the unfamiliar universe, perpetrating a great trade of corruptions against their deep-seated political, professional, and cultural thoughts ( Pearson, 1995 ) . As clip moved on, they gained a certain grade of assurance in acquisition and pass oning with the Western engineering and this was further aided by the new policy prefering the betterment on professions and intellectuals ( Sidel A ; Sidel, 1982 ) . 4.2 Reorganizing and Reconstruction of Mental Health Policy Centralized Approach Stimulated by the inhibitory enthusiasm of researches during the Cultural Revolution, in 1982, the first nation-wide epidemiological survey was done by head-shrinkers and bookmans in seven parts in People s Republic of China, ended with a warning consequence: the prevalence of mental unwellness was estimated to be 11.8 % ( Zhang, Shen, A ; Li, 1998 ) , and it was reported that there seemed to be an addition in the per centum of schizophrenic patients in mental infirmaries, from 70 % in the 1970s to 80 % in 1980 ( Yang, 1994 ) . Obviously, this signified a great demand of mental wellness services within the society and more effectual mental wellness policy was peremptorily required by the dominate Party and authorities. In Article 45 of the 1982 Constitution of the People s Republic of China that still patterns till now, it clearly stated the province s willingness for offering the public assistance and support to guarantee the wellness of people: Citizens of the People s Republic of China have the right to material aid from the province and society when they are old, ill or disenable. The province develops the societal insurance, societal alleviation and medical and wellness services that are required to enable citizens to bask this right. The province and society guarantee the support of handicapped members of the armed forces, provide pensions to the households of sufferer and give discriminatory intervention to the households of military forces. The province and society help do agreements for the work, support and instruction of the blind, deaf-and-dumb and other handicapped citizens. ( National People s Congress ( NPC ) of the People s Republic of China, 1982 ) However, while using the construct of welfare mix , which developed to analyse the assorted beginnings of public assistance including wellness constabularies in most provinces and societies ( Higgins, 1981 ; Pinker, 1985 ; Rose A ; Shiratori, 1986 ) , the PRC has to imagine and acknowledge the comparatively fringy function that the province dramas, as in the three-concentric circle model of welfare mix in this Party-dominated province, the household locates at the Centre, the collective ( by danwei or by the vicinity ) situates the following, and the province displacements to the outer ring ( Wong, 1992 ) . However, there have still been comparatively uninterrupted reforms and attempts the People s Republic of China has been lending to since the 1980s ( Wong, 1992 ) . In 1986, the Second National Conference on Mental Health Work was held in Shanghai, 28 old ages after the first 1 in Nanjing in 1958. After the treatment, an of import functionary papers named Some Opinions about Strengthening Mental Health Work ( e?†ºc†YeaˆÂ °Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ?†?eaˆ?a†¦Ã‚ ¬a ®Ã¢â‚¬ °ee--?aS a? ·cc?ze?†ºc†Ya ·?acs„?„?e ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¹ ) was issued and a cardinal policy was formulated together with three governmental setups: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Civil Affairs, and Ministry of Public Security ( 1987 ) . In this papers, several troubles and insufficiencies in the 1980s were emphasized, including the fact that there was merely 50 % of the support for the general infirmaries of the same class went to psychiatric infirmaries, and about 80 % of the people with mental unwellness or upsets received no intervention, with reasonably 5 % of them could be admitted to a infirmary and so on ( Pearson, 1996 ) . Consequently, si x recommendations or waies were offered: ( 1 ) Practically, strengthen the overall coordination of mental wellness services by three governmental ministries ( Ministry of Health, Ministry of Civil Affairs, and Ministry of Public Security ) , specifically in support, staffing, preparation and educating. ( 2 ) Ideologically, include mental wellness policy ends and works into the route to Chinese Socialism Construction Spiritual Culture in People s Republic of China. Hence, local and regional governments from all degrees should necessarily back up it. ( 3 ) Increasingly, outline the programs and undertakings to set up multi-level staffing, preparation, and advancing the mental wellness workers so that more professional services will be provided. ( 4 ) Legally, develop national mental wellness jurisprudence and proper processs in forensic direction of admittance, detainment, and intervention of mental wellness intervention of mental patients, in peculiarly those with condemnable records, violent injuries or possible injuries to the others. ( 5 ) Locally, facilitate related public assistance services and community support such as vocational rehabilitation, adjustment, and employment for dismissed mental patients so that they can be decently integrated into the community. Related parties and organisations should besides collaborate into the bar of mental unwellness. ( 6 ) Broadly, increase the measure and quality of mental wellness instruction to the populace, so that everyone in the society shall take serious about his or her mental wellness conditions can make a stable society. ( Ministry of Health et al. , 1987 ) Probably, this was the most honorable and realistic functionary statement available about the status of psychiatric services boulder clay so. And it was clear that those jobs support, preparation, staffing, stigmatisation, and acknowledgment of mental wellness were rather similar to those experienced elsewhere. However, the difference, possibly the most destructive, was that there was no other state faced the sheer outrageousness of coordinating and providing services for, as the papers mentioned, ten million psychiatric patients. And this necessarily warned and convinced the policy shapers of possible mental unwellness to acknowledge the negative consequence on the wellness of the multitudes and that covering with it should be approached with the same sum of energy as devoted to undertaking bilharzia or malaria that were prevailed at that clip ( Pearson, 1995 ) . However, there were several insufficiencies and ambiguities in the 1987 papers committed if it would be referred as a guideline that burdened great outlooks. First of wholly, the recommendations were more like a wish list with small matter-of-fact suggestions or operational programs to sketch the indispensable or even necessary stairss to be taken, the stakeholders to be influenced and concrete ends to be achieved. Besides, there were no specific guidelines as to calculate out to what figure of hospital beds, out-patient installations, and so on there should be per caput of population. Second, it was obvious that there lacked a elaborate considerations for resource deductions of where the support comes from and how will it be shared within national, provincial, and local organisations. Last but non least, after analyzing the tones and concerns of the text, there lefts an feeling that people involved in outlining this papers were from the urban-based category, so that few efforts wer e to turn to the most serious job in service bringing, or how to run into the demand for the 75 % rural patients ; nor the prognosis for drug direction in infirmaries located in the undeveloped countries so that they may non pin down in the deficit of interrupted supplies.

4 Tips for Writing a Stand-Out Why UChicago Essay

4 Tips for Writing a Stand-Out Why UChicago Essay SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips For students applying to the University of Chicago, the â€Å"Why UChicago† essay is more straightforward than most of the other essay prompts you’ll see, but it can still be intimidating to try to figure out how you should tackle this essay. What should you mention? What will impress the admissions team? What are they really looking for in your response? We break down the why UChicago essay, explain everything the University of Chicago is looking for in this essay, suggest topics to write about that’ll help you stand out, and give why UChicago essay examples to help get your creative juices flowing. The Why UChicago Essay Prompt The â€Å"Why the University of Chicago† essay is the only prompt that shows up every year on the UChicago application, and it’s also the only prompt that everyone must answer (for the other essay you’ll have multiple prompts to choose between). This alone should tell you that the University of Chicago takes this essay, and applicants’ responses to it, seriously. Here is the prompt: â€Å"How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to UChicago.† There is no strict word limit to this essay, but UChicago suggests a response of around 250-500 words. What Is the Purpose of This Essay? Why does UChicago require applicants to answer this essay? What are they really looking for in your response? Let’s analyze this prompt. No matter which schools you’re applying to, "why our college?" is probably the most common prompt you’ll on college applications, and for good reason: colleges, including the University of Chicago, want to see that you really want to attend their school. Why? Applicants who love UChicago are more likely to accept an offer of admission, be committed to their studies, participate in extracurriculars, and give back after they graduate. Basically, schools are looking for students who will take advantage of all the unique opportunities they offer so they have the biggest impact at the school and when they’re alumni. If you show in your essay that you really love UChicago, it makes admissions officers feel more confident you’re going to have a significant and positive impact on their school. If you can’t give any compelling reasons for choosing UChicago and/or you don’t seem to have done much research on it, that makes UChicago worry that you’re not that invested and will only do the bare minimum in college, without having much of an impact at the school or afterwards. They may also think you don’t really care about getting into their school, which can make them less likely to admit you. Additionally, UChicago asks you to write this essay to ensure that you and their school are a good fit for each other. If you use the why UChicago essay to talk about how much you love D1 sports teams or how you want to be a famous researcher in geology, the admissions team may be hesitant to offer you a place at UChicago since their sports teams are Division III, and they don’t have a geology major. Basically the purpose of this essay is two part: UChicago wants to make sure you know and value what they offer, and they also want to see how you’re going to make use of these opportunities to reach your goals for the future. What Should You Write About in Your â€Å"Why UChicago† Essay? There are multiple ways you could approach this essay prompt; although since UChicago is best known for its academics (as opposed to killer sports teams, for example), most people will discuss the academic side for at least part of their response. Here's a list of possible topics you can write about: Majors or classes you’re especially interested in The UChicago Core curriculum Professors whose work you admire and whom you’d like to study with or conduct research with Extracurriculars that you’d be interesting in joining The school's intense academic atmosphere UChicago Scav Research opportunities you’d like to have Small class size/discussion-based classes University of Chicago students you’ve met who you admire Volunteer opportunities Financial aid opportunities UChicago offers that make it possible for you to attend In your response, you should choose about one to three reasons why you think the University of Chicago is the best school for you. For each reason, you should describe what UChicago offers and connect it back to your interest and skills to show how you’re a good match for the school. Remember to answer the prompt completely; this means talking about both the learning and community at UChicago, as well as your plans for the future and how UChicago can help you achieve them. There are multiple ways to do this research: School website Course catalog School newspaper Campus visit Meeting with an alum or current student Meeting with a professor #2: Be Specific From your research, you should have come up with specific reasons why UChicago is a great school for you. The more specific you can be when answering this prompt, the better. Don’t say UChicago has great academics, caring professors, and an interesting student body. Most schools have that. Instead, try to mention opportunities only UChicago can provide, like specific professors, course names, extracurriculars, or research opportunities. The things you discuss should be things your other top schools don’t offer, things that really make UChicago stand out. #3: Show Your Passion UChicago wants students who care a lot about what their studies and their school, so make sure this comes across in their response. A bland statement like, â€Å"I am impressed by UChicago’s strong economics program† doesn’t tell the school anything about you or help you stand out from other applicants. You’ve done your research to mention specific qualities of UChicago that have enticed you, and now you need to discuss specific qualities about yourself as well. Why does the economics program make you so excited? What do you want to get out of it? Do you want to use your knowledge to study the economies of different developing countries and use that knowledge to fight global poverty? That's what you should write about. Showing a passion that’s unique to you will help differentiate you from other applicants and show UChicago that you’re going to take your studies seriously. #4: Discuss Your Vision for the Future It states right in the Why UChicago essay prompt that they want to know how UChicago relates to your goals for the future. So let them know your plans!Do you hope to use your time at UChicago as a launching pad for a career as a researcher at Fermilab? The first is an excerpt of an essay written by an admitted student, and the second is an essay we wrote. After the examples we explain what makes them excellent responses. Essay 1 As I prepare to leave my home for a university, I dream of joining the University of Chicago community. In all honesty, UChicago is probably the only university that will accept and even encourage my eclectic thinking and passion for finding adventure in everyday life. Although I hope to major in Computer Science, I also want to study political science and the Italian language to the extent that I can confidently debate Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan and copy Dante’s terza rima poetry. I want to learn about game theory and astrophysics not just in surface-level introductory classes, but through in-depth discussion and analysis. At UChicago, the Core curriculum will feed my hunger for a broad undergraduate education by guaranteeing that one-third of my studies will be dedicated to the exploration of the humanities, sciences, and arts. I yearn to engage in vibrant discussion with UChicago musicians who study neurosciences, business majors who star in theatrical productions, and psychology students who are learning Mandarin. At any other school, I would be an untraditional student, but at UChicago, I will fit right in. Traditional warrior princesses feel at home in castles; it is no surprise that UChicago’s campus is full of them. At UChicago, surrounded by diverse thinkers and unique personalities of every kind, I know that I will feel at home, too. -Samantha M. Essay 2 It was reading an issue of the Chicago Shady Dealer that made me know the University of Chicago was the right school for me. Any school that produced a satire paper that included hilarious and clever articles joking about students taking a math class in an abandoned parking garage or hysterical preaching and projectile vomiting during alumni weekend was a place where I knew I’d belong. After speaking with a current UChicago student, I felt even more strongly that this is the school for me.This student is a Creative Writing major, as I plan to be, and he mentioned so many opportunities for University of Chicago students to publish their writing, from the Shady Dealer, to the Chicago Maroon, to Sliced Bread. My only concern was having enough time to write for all these publications! I’m especially interested in the student magazine Diskord because of its focus on student opinions of national and global news. Many people dismiss young people as uninformed or naà ¯ve, but I’ve found many have my peers have extremely important things to say, and it’s important to hear each other. The student I spoke with on the phone also mentioned that he was able to combine his interests in poetry and French Literature, and I really like how interdisciplinary the major is. Theater and scriptwriting is something I’ve always been interested in learning more about, and I think University of Chicago’s theater workshops and groups like Court Theatre could help me gain more skills in this area. People joke the University of Chicago is where fun comes to die, but from what I’ve seen, it’s just the opposite. I’ve never met a group of students who were so funny, creative, and intent on making an impact, and I’d love to be a part of that. Why Do These Essays Work? Market Myths Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words

Market Myths - Essay Example Myth Number One is that some people equate investing in the stock market to gambling with their money. As a result of this fallacy, a significant number of individuals avoid the stock market. An understanding of the reasoning behind purchasing stocks needs to be well-known in order for an individual to understand how investing in them is different from gambling. It is important to remember that a share of stock represents partial ownership in a company, and it gives the person who owns the stock some of the profits that the company makes and allows that individual to share assets (Investopedia, 2008, pg. 1). "Too often, investors think of shares as simply a trading vehicle, and they forget that stock represents the ownership of a company. In the stock market, investors are constantly trying to assess the profit that will be left over for shareholders. This is why stock prices fluctuate. The outlook for business conditions is always changing, and so are the future earnings of a company" (Investopedia, 2008, pg. 1). It is a rather daunting task to determine the value of a company at any given point. The Random Walk Theory applies, and this theory states that "there are so many variables involved that the short-term price movements appear to be random (Investopedia, 2008, pg. 1). ... 1) Also according to the article by Investopedia (2008, pg. 2), "Gambling, on the contrary, is a zero-sum game. It merely takes money from a loser and gives it to a winner. No value is ever created. By investing, we increase the overall wealth of an economy. As companies compete, they increase productivity and develop products thatcan make our lives better. Don't confuse investing and creating wealth with gambling's zero-sum game." Myth Number Two is that the stock market is some type of fancy, executive club reserved for the wealthy and for brokers and that the average person cannot play, or at least cannot play very well. The fact is that brokers do not hold all of the secrets anymore. Thanks to advances in technology and the advent of the Internet, all of the forecasting a research tools that brokers use are available to the general public as well, and they are really easy to get at pretty much any retail store that sells books and electronics (Investopedia, 2008). "Actually, individuals have an advantage over institutional investors becauseindividuals can afford to be long-term oriented. The big money managers are under extreme pressure to get high returns every quarter. Their performance is often so scrutinized that they can't invest in opportunities that take some time to develop. Individuals have the ability to look beyond temporary downturns in favor of a long-term outlook" (Investopedia, 2008, pg. 3). The third market myth is that stocks that have risen high and fallen will rise again. This is not necessarily true. Investopedia (2008, pg. 3) offers the following example: "Suppose you are looking at two stocks: XYZ made an all time high last year around $50 but

Leadership - Essay Example To become an effective leader, it is crucial on the part of the manager to be able to find the type of leadership approach that works best for them. Often times, choosing the best leadership style depends on the manager’s personality, characteristic, working environment and the team members. The focus of this study is to gather primary and secondary research as a way of determining the qualifications of a good leader. The first part of the paper will address the problem statement by conducting a literature review with regards to the qualifications of effective leaders. The second part of the paper will gather primary research data by conducting an actual research survey. In the process of presenting the primary data, the research survey methodology which consists of five relevant questions will be tackled in details. Based on the gathered primary and secondary research information, a proposed leadership model will be constructed prior to the conclusion and recommendations. Leadership is about the ability of a person to make his/her subordinate follow and adapt with useful changes within or outside the work place. Since it takes a special interpersonal influence and motivational skills to enable a manager to effectively mould and convert a group of employee into becoming a responsible and efficient subordinate, it remains a challenge on the part of each manager to be able to identify the qualities of a good leader. A leader can easily become an effective manager. However, not all managers are capable of becoming good leaders. For this reason, the main purpose of the research study is to increase the knowledge of the managers with regards to the essential qualities that makes up a good leader. A good leader needs to have a combination of wisdom, integrity, sensitivity, and tenacity (WITS). (van Maurik, 1994) The author mentioned that a good leader must have these traits to be able to have a clear vision of the

Advantages Of Open Tendering Construction Essay

Advantages Of Open Tendering Construction Essay Open tendering is a one-stage bidding process, where all interested and responding to contract notice will be invited to submit a tender.   The contract notice states where to obtain tender documents and the last date when tenders will be accepted.  Open tender is open to public all the interested firms can apply for the contract. Advantages of open tendering No favourism (everyone can apply for the tender) High competition in pricing ( client will take good prize) New firms can enter into the market Increased employment opportunities ( new firms comes) New experience (new technology) Helps contractors to grow Contractors get new client Disadvantages of open tendering Selected contractor might not suit the project (ex: no experience) Inexperienced firms can enter into the market Unknown firms can enter into the markets Waste of estimating time High aggregate cost for tender (ex: electricity, transport) High evaluation time (because we have to check all the documents) Unrealistic competition Arbitrations 2.0.2 Selective tendering A process of competitive tendering for award of the contract for construction whereby the owner selects the constructors who are invited to tender to the exclusion of others, as in the process of open tendering. It means the client selects the contractor from limited list invitation to tender is made by client to the contractor by a letter. In selective tendering short listing can be done by, Invitation ICTAD category Prequalification (financial) Post qualification Negotiation In selective tendering there can be two stages, One stage selective tendering Two stage selective tendering One stage selective tendering Client advertise for contractor to apply for short listing Short list the contractors who are considered suitable to do the work approved list is maintained by the client. (competition) Two stage selective tendering Single stage for competition, double stage for competition plus early start of work at site. Contractors experience/ practical knowledge is useful at the design stage First stage Inviting for tender Inform about 2 stage tender Pre select the contractor (a simple BOQ) Contractors give proposal for the design Second stage Negotiate the rates with the contractor for 2nd time Advantages of Selective tender Well known contractor Good quality Less aggregate cost for tender Less evaluation time Disadvantages of Selective tender Favourism Less price competition Cartel tendering New firms cannot enter in to the market Regular updating is necessary 2.1 Factors which used by client to formulate the select list 2.1.1 Information of the company Information of the company is very important when the clients are giving the tenders. Because they want to know how much they can trust that company. Reason is some companies are new to the industry some are very old to the Industry. When companies are new to industry, the risk is more to the client. Because when companies are new to the industry most of the companies are not continue their services. But when we talking about old companies they are continue their services. Because of that clients like to handover there tender to the old companies than the new companies. 2.1.2 Awards achievements When the companies are continuing their work some departments presenting awards for best company of the yearetc. When companies are offering awards clients like to handover their tender to these companies. Because theres no any risk to the client. 2.1.3 Successfully complete projects Client giving a contract to a contractor it is essential to know the successfully completed projects. Because some companies even not complete a single project even. So that is developing their trust on the contractor. 2.1.4 Work in progress The work they doing during they applying for the tender is more important for client to handover their tender for the contractor. That is a benchmark for the company to take a tender. 2.1.5 ICTAD grading and relevant documentary evidence In construction field ICTAD grading is more important than the other qualifications to get a contract or a tender. ICTAD grading is one that saying about the company which is good in construction work that company has evidence to prove that, their company is good in work completing projects. So ICTAD grading is more useful to client to give a tender to a company. 2.1.6 Financial information Financial side of a company is very useful for client whether give the tender or not to the company. Because some of the companies are new to the industry. So their financial side is not stronger than the other old companies. So the financial information of a company is more useful for client. 2.1.7 Experience as a main contractor Experience as a main contractor is more essential for the client to build up a relationship or to give the tender to the contractor. Because to take the tender for their company all the construction companies of the country apply for it. But some are new some are very much of experience companies. Actually client not takes any responsibility to hand over the tender to new company. Because they still new to the industry they are not take any experience as a main contractors, but old companies they are full fill with lack of experience as a main contractor. So client likes to give their tender to an experience company. So experience as a main contractor is very important bench mark to get a tender from client. 2.2 Typical clients 2.2.1 Banks Analysis of the client internal needs, new product which impact on the internal environment of the client, management of the public, opened, or closed tender for suppliers of required solution, evaluation of tender, the draft of basic documents in terms of functional specification of solution and its pricing structure, origination of the documentation. 2.2.2 Merchant Analysis of merchants (client) internal needs, target group specification with full consideration of credit card products, Suggestion of adequate partner for credit card acceptance, invitation and management of the public, opened, or closed tender for suppliers of required solution evaluation of the tender. 2.2.3 Government agency Analysis of clients internal needs in consideration of specifics of public service, analysis of impact of new solutions on internal environment of the client, invitation and management of the public tender for suppliers of required solution evaluation of tender. 2.3 Tender process There are three parties of tender process. There are Client Consultant Contractor 2.3.1Client A client is a person (individual or organization) which carry out a project or a work himself or another person or an organization. It means client is anyone having construction or building work carried out as part of their business. Without a client we cant a construction project. He is the man who authorized the project. Client has some kinds of duties to do. Check competence and resources of all appointees. Allow sufficient time and resources for all stages. Be satisfied that each designer and contractor appointed has adequate training, knowledge, experience and resources for the work to be performed. Allow sufficient time for each stage of the project, from concept onwards. Provide a copy of the safety and health plan prepared by the PSDP to every person tendering for the project. Provide information relating to the health and safety file to the CDM coordinator. Before the construction work starts client have to see whether the welfare facilities are on the site. 2.3.2 Consultant A consultant is an individual who possesses special knowledge or skills and provide that expertise to a client for a fee. Commonly the work as a consulting firms but sometimes they work for legal firms sometimes they work as an individual contractor. Construction consultants do many different things. Some assist companies with administration tasks; they make sure everything is running smoothly, and on time, so that the site owner and managers can concentrate on other business matters. A construction consultant may be hired to keep a project running on budget, and handle any problems that may appear. This may also mean working as an in-between for the owner of the site and the construction crew. Another duty which consultant has to do is judicial work. It means some times when continuing the work it might be failed. Then the consultant has to give the reason why the construction process is failed. Sometimes the problem must be small, such as weakness of the labours or sometimes the problem with the structure which design. Another duty of a consultant is if the building or the project fails consultant has to inform the client why it is failed, what the reasons for failed etc. 2.3.3 Contractor A contractor is a person who in the course or furtherance of a business, carries out or manages construction work. It means in construction he is the man who responsible day to day happening in the site. Actually we can name the contractor as general contractor of the site. The contractor is employed by the client. Imagine ones contractor got the tender first thing is he have to visit the site to get better understanding about the project. Secondly the contractor makes the prizing list which called as estimate. A duty which contractor has to do is manage the work. It is the most important thing in the site. It means he has to plan the day today work like what are the risks we have to achieve, when we going to complete this project, what are the needs of the labours including health safety, protecting the public while doing the projectà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦etc. as a contractor if he plans the work in time we can keep the relationship between client contractor. Another responsibility which contractor needs to do is providing information trains them for the rules regulations. Its includes site introduction, risks, sit rulesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦etc. 2.4 Contractual documentation required for tendering bid bond form of tender construction program day work schedule power of attorney prequalification document Quality and safety proceeding Copy of ICTAD,NCASL registration 2.4.1 Bid bond On most major construction projects, work is awarded through a process known as bidding. A bid bond is important to show proof of guarantee to the project owner that you can obey with the bid contract and also that you can accomplish the job as laid out in the contract. A bid bond is a guarantee that you provide to the project owner stating that you have the capability to take on and implement the project once you are selected during the bidding process. Normally, project owners do not know if a contractor is financially stable or has the necessary resources to take on a project 2.4.2 how bid bond works During bidding, various contractors estimate what the job will cost to complete. They submit this price to the owner in the form of a bid. The lowest bidder will be awarded a contract for the job. If this bidder realizes they made a mistake with their bid, or refuses to sign the contract for any reason, the bonding company will ensure the owner suffers no financial loss. This usually means that the bonding company will pay the owner the difference between the lowest and next lowest bids. Sometimes, the bonding company may sue the contractor to recover these costs. The possibility of lawsuits depends on the terms of the bond. 2.4.3 Bid bond Requirements Under the  Mille act, which is still the standard today, all bidders are required to submit bid bonds on any federal project. Many private firms have copied this trend to protect themselves from risk during the bid process. Getting bond is very important if you want your company to become competitive in construction filed. 2.4.4 Form of tender A tender form is issued to a supplier during the Invitation to Tender process. Each Tender Form helps the team to collect information about potential suppliers so that they can appoint one or more preferred suppliers to the business. As each Tender Form is released to the suppliers, the progress is tracked in the Tender Register. To save time creating each Tender Form, a Tender Template is used. 2.4.5 Construction program A work method statement, sometimes referred to as a safe work method statement or a safe work procedure, is a part of a workplace safety plan. It is predominately used in construction to describe a document that gives specific instructions on how to safely perform a work related task, or operate a piece of plant or equipment. In many countries it is law to have work method statements, or similar, in place to advice employees and contractors on how to perform work related tasks safely. The statement is generally used as part of a safety induction and then referred to as required throughout a workplace. The construction program envelop the following, purpose scope
