Should Sports Medicine Be Increased Popular Among Students

Thousands of students apply to college every year. Most likely one of the students’ first thoughts is what he is going choose to study. There are numerous majors to choose from, and each provide the student with multiple opportunities for jobs once he has completed college. One major that is becoming popular is exercise science. Exercise Science is the scientific study or analysis of physical activity/exercise. Due to the fact that there are a variety of different exercises/ ways to be physically active and every person is different exercise science is extremely broad. New research leads to more ways to study exercise science. For thousands of years people have been treating others with remedies and gradually learn more and newer techniques. For the most part sports medicine has not been kn own as a separate concentration in health care. It was not until the late 20th century that sports science emerged as a separate concentration in the health care field. When it first emerged sports science was predominately an orthopedic subspecialty. This lead to the inauguration of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) in 1972. Besides the orthopedic subspecialty the division was strictly overseen by primary care physicians. There was no real distinction between sports medicine professionals and primary care physicians. In 1991, the creation of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) was founded. Its purpose was to represent the interests of non-surgical, or primary care of sports medicine specialists. Finally, in 1992 sports medicine was officially recognized as a subspecialty under the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). The growth has been slow, but sports medicine professionals are finally starting to be seen in their own separat e group of health care.
